Melbourne Brain Centre Parkville enhances Victorias reputation for medical research

The Melbourne Brain Centre in Parkville will build on Victoria’s internationallyrenowned

reputation for leadership in medical research, Premier Ted Baillieu said

today.

Speaking at the opening of the Melbourne Brain Centre at Melbourne University’s

Parkville campus, Mr Baillieu said the new facility would strengthen connections

between researchers and clinicians, enhancing their ability to work on common

problems, and help to attract and retain the best and brightest scientific minds from

around the world.

“The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to promoting and supporting

Victoria’s growing research capabilities in all fields, including our strong contribution to

medical research which is on par with the best medical research expertise in the

world,” Mr Baillieu said.

“This wonderful centre is the focus of a $225 million project that incorporates three

sites and is one of the largest neuroscience facilities in the world.

“It will accommodate research on brain disorders that affect one in seven people,

including stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease,

epilepsy and mental illness.

“Victoria’s great strengths in medical research include our collaborative approach and

the solid links forged between clinicians, researchers, hospitals and research

institutes,” Mr Baillieu said.

The Melbourne Brain Centre will house researchers of the Florey Neuroscience

Institutes, the Mental Health Research Institute and the University of Melbourne and

enable collaboration in new, purpose-built facilities here in Parkville.

The Victorian Government joined the Commonwealth Government – with assistance

from the Ian Potter Foundation, the Myer Foundation and other benefactors – to fund

the centre and ensure its completion.
