Dr. Christine Bennett appointed Chair of Research Australia

 

3rd September 2010. The Board of Research Australia is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Christine Bennett as Chairman of Research Australia.

 

Dr Bennett is Chief Medical Officer and Director Health Care Leadership with Bupa Australia. 

 

Dr Bennett is well positioned to take the organization into its next important stage of development.   Her understanding of health policy and systems, as former Chairman of the Health and Hospital Reform Commission and her understanding of the importance of research and innovation will be invaluable in leading Research Australia through the next period of its advancement.

 

Dr Bennett has been associated with Research Australia over many years, firstly as CEO between 2003 and 2006, as a Director between 2006 and 2008, and through her reappointment to the Board in November 2009.

 

Retiring Chairman, Dr Chris Roberts, CEO of Cochlear Ltd, has led Research Australia for almost six years, a period of strong growth in Australian health and medical research. Dr Roberts will remain active on the Board.

 

Since its formation in 2000, Research Australia is recognized as a leading national alliance of 160 universities, research institutes, industry, philanthropic and community organizations with a mission to make health and medical research a higher national priority.  It has achieved major success in securing the growth of funding for Australian health research.

 

“Our next major challenge is to ensure we protect and build upon the gains of the past ten years, and ensure we fully realize the benefits in terms of improvements to community health,” Dr Bennett said.
