Commercialisation Australia is open for business and accepting applications.
Ms Tricia Berman, General Manager of the Innovation Policy Branch and Acting CEO of Commercialisation Australia will present what support Commercialisation Australia can offer to biotechnology researchers and firms for commercialisation activities. There are numerous opportunities for many in our sector to contribute to this new initiative. Tricia will provide a comprehensive overview of Commercialisation Australia and highlight how interested parties can become involved through the Volunteer Business Mentor program.
A key component of the budget announcement in May 2009, Commercialisation Australia is a merit based, competitive assistance program designed to assist researchers, entrepreneurs and innovative companies turn ideas into successful commercial ventures.
As one commentator recently suggested in the media, ‘Commercialisation Australia appears to be a spiced up version of COMET meets Commercial Ready. And although it is missing some elements a lot of us were hoping for, exchange is not an option.’
Concerns have been raised that although Commercialisation Australia is a positive development, the Federal Government may have underestimated how many organisations will apply for assistance. With a kitty of $196.1 million over the next four years, and ongoing funding of $82 million a year thereafter – the offering is certainly not insignificant but the catch is that it is one of the only sources of assistance for commercialisation and there will be intense competition for funds.
Despite concern about capacity, the details are nonetheless attractive, funding applications can be submitted any time, proof of concept grants, assistance in recruiting skilled executives and early stage repayable grants up to $2 million.
Commercialisation Australia is the Australian Government's primary source of assistance for commercialisation and is delivered by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.
