About This Event

Everyone is guilty of over-indulging during the festive season but what if the traditional fat-laden and festive foods you consumed were actually good for you? What if there were “functional-foods” that could reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and lower obesity?

CSIRO, through its Food Futures National Research Flagship, has already developed BARLEYmaxTM a naturally bred “super-grain” that has recently been introduced into breakfast cereals, with more products to follow soon. Work is also underway on other new types of healthy grains and a range of other food innovations.
So with quite a number of these functional foods about to hit our supermarket shelves, the December BioBreakfast will give you a timely update on the growing area of functional foods.

Dr Bruce Lee (Director, CSIRO Food Futures Flagship) will give us the background on ‘Why develop a ‘functional food?’ Specifically:

• Is there a real nutritional need? Is there something missing in the western or poverty-stricken nations’ diets?
• Are new foods being developed to meet a market need or is the market need being generated?
• What food areas is CSIRO looking to develop?
• What is the process of commercialisation?

Dr Ross Crittenden from MG Nutritionals will present case studies for the development and commercialisation of functional foods that can help you get back into shape after the Christmas excesses.  Ross will give details on the commercialisation path for functional foods and the regulatory issues that apply to this area.  He will also discuss some exciting new findings in dairy biologics that have significant potential to build muscle and help address the emerging epidemic in metabolic syndrome.

The case studies will include the commercialisation of proteins affecting body composition and athletic performance: ASCEND Recovery, Catalyst and RIPTAC. He will discuss the clinical testing, health claims, regulatory issues and IP.
