About This Event

“When to sell, when to license and when to call it quits”

Biotech companies continually stand at a crossroad of how to progress their internal programs if at all. In the words of the great biotech prophet Kenny Rogers; “you gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away and know when to run..... There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done”.

The decisions are always business critical, the risks are high and the end points are frequently unpredictable.  Some finish up in the biotech graveyard and others rise like a phoenix. What should you do if a trial fails? What if the data is marginal? Do companies hand back cash, try to in-license new programs and should companies take licensing and sales revenue and invest further into new programs or look to be acquired?

The strategic decision framework and process for biotech is a fundamental one, so what can we learn from  peers in terms of predicting outcomes, reading the signs, best representing shareholders and managing their expectations.  .
There are plenty of companies that have failed programs and reinvented themselves – Inhibitex was acquired this year by BMS for $2.5M for their HCV program which they in-licensed at the preclinical stage after their antibacterial antibody program failed clinical studies.

A panel discussion chaired by Dr Julian Chick of Allied Healthcare Group, will look at the timing of licensing technology, when to raise capital, when to look to sell or merge the company and when to simply walk away.  Barriers to more M&A deals in Australian biotech sector, something that many have been seeking for a long time, will also be on the discussion agenda.

• Julian Chick (Allied Healthcare Group)
• David Blake (Bioshares)
• Paul Duske (Gresham Partners)
• Stewart Washer (Immuron)
• Brad Ross-Sampson (Growth Equities Partners)

The briefing will be hosted by George Dakis, Nexia Australia
