In May 2009, regenerative medicine company Organovo partnered with engineering firm Invetech to develop the world's first commercially viable 3D bio-printer to print human tissues.
With low organ donation rates worldwide and organ rejection associated with transplantation, the 3D bio-printer goes a long way to addressing these issues by taking the patient's own cells and making three dimensional organs on demand.
Mr Peter Riddell and Mr Chris Leigh-Lancaster (Both from Invetech) will discuss the commercialisation of the 3D bio-printer and whether the printer will be used for research on clinical applications. They will discuss the technical challenges in developing a flexible platform to enable different tissues to be made and how more complex organs can be manufactured.
In November 2011, Organovo and Invetech were recognised with the National Engineering Innovation Award for the 3D bio-printer at the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards in Canberra.
