According to Australia’s national mental illness website BeyondBlue, 6.2% of Australians aged 16 or over have suffered from a depressive disorder in the last 12 months with 15% of all Australians having suffered from a depressive disorder at one time in their lives.
With the increase in environmental triggers, like the GFC and changes in lifestyle and our communities, are we getting more depressed? What developments have there been in diagnosis and treatment of this disease? Are all the possible drug candidates involved in the biochemistry of this disease already on the market?
Professor Jayashri Kulkarni (Director, Monash Alfred Psychiatric Research Centre MAPRC) has extensive experience in clinical research and treating patients with mental illness. At the September BioBreakfast she will discuss the state of Australia’s mental health specifically depression and what are some of the recent advances in her research for new treatments.
Dr Roger Edwards (CEO, Neural Diagnostics) will discuss developments in devices used to diagnose depression, whether this is a growing market and who the players are.
