About This Event

Today we find ourselves in a unique position. On the one hand there is an economic crisis resulting in many talented people being on the market and yet in Australia we also have a skills shortage in positions where a high degree of technical training is required. How do you attract the best people to your company? How do you keep your current highly trained staff?  How do the changes in the Fair Work Act affect those currently employed in the Biotech industry?  What should you be doing to ensure a good working relationship in this challenging environment and not have it deteriorate into an HR or legal battle?  Start by strategically planning the employment lifecycle.

The April BioWorkshop will discuss issues that arise at different stages of the employment lifecycle.  This workshop aims to address some of the challenges in this fast moving environment and provide practical insights and relevant case studies for discussion including the changes to the Fair Work Act.  Tim Davey (Senior associate in Human Resources & Industrial Relations law) and Kylie Diwell (Special Counsel in Intellectual Property law) of Minter Ellison will focus on:

Set up – Getting it right
The contract
• Describing the role
• Flexibility of arrangement
• IP ownership
• Confidentiality obligations
• Conflicts of interest
• Termination provisions

Ongoing management
Effect of the GFC and general obligations
• Changes to an employee's role
• Alternative employment options, including:
• Obligations to re-skill or re-deploy staff
• Directing employees to take leave
• Reducing work hours and/or pay
• Handling retrenchments
• Knowledge capture

Exit arrangements
• Enforcement of rights (including post employment restraints)
• Termination letters

Janine Pickering (HR consultant) will share her vast experience, consulting to Biotechnology companies on HR strategy. She will provide valuable expertise and give practical examples on ‘what works and what hasn’t worked and why.’
