The South East Melbourne Innovation Precinct (SEMIP) is home to Monash University, CSIRO, Southern Health (the largest public healthcare provider in Victoria), the Monash Health Translation Precinct, the Australian Synchrotron and Melbourne’s key pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, including GlaxoSmithKline, Bristol Myers Squibb, Servier and others.
The Precinct contains 40% of Victoria’s manufacturing activities and over 56,000 registered businesses. Industry sectors encompass manufacturing, retail, property and business services (including scientific and engineering services). The region is focussed on the high end and growth sectors, such as chemicals, polymers, machinery and equipment, applications in transport, health, construction and the environment.
Monash University has one of Victoria’s three medical schools, and is the site of significant preclinical, clinical and translational research activity. Monash’s Science Technology Research and Innovation Precinct (STRIP) is the cornerstone of SEMIP’s preclinical research, while the Monash Health Translation Precinct adjacent the Monash Medical Centre is the site of considerable clinical and translational research.
Located 25 kilometres from Melbourne’s central business district (approximately 25 minutes drive), the precinct boundaries comprise the local government areas of Greater Dandenong, Kingston, Knox and Monash City.
A SEMIP Strategic Plan aims to expand the innovation capabilities of the region by the implementation of a range of initiatives that improve connections and interactions between businesses and between businesses and researchers; provide more streamlined access to business innovation services; and build a sense of place attracting people to invest, work and live in the South East region.
