BioMelbourne Network

The Network is ‘the leadership forum for the development and promotion of the Victorian biotechnology industry'.

Melbourne is the leading centre of biomedical research in the Asia Pacific Region and BioMelbourne Network is a key development force in the development of our industry to become the 5th largest global biotechnology centre by 2010.

The BioMelbourne Network, as the peak leadership forum representing all sectors of Victoria’s biotechnology industry, will play a specific role as a facilitator, influencer and direction setter in helping achieve the State’s biotechnology vision.

To achieve success as a vibrant commercial cluster, BioMelbourne Network will facilitate the sustained effort of a network of parties including State and Federal Governments, biotechnology companies, universities, research institutions, industry suppliers, supporters and leading individuals.

Outcomes for Victoria

The BioMelbourne Network will have a major beneficial impact on the development of Victoria’s biotechnology sector by:

  • Acheiving a greater connection between the business and scientific community
  • Achieving a coordinated effort to globally compete for talent, company and investor attention
  • Strengthening the Victorian biotechnology ‘brand’ internationally
  • Increasing the level of government funding for infrastructure and program funding targeted toward the most appropriate areas
  • Increasing the level of private sector capital investment, from domestic and international sources
  • Increasing the number of scientists in Victoria – by attracting overseas returnees by greater share of science career choice at university entry level

2007 - 2010 Victorian Biotechnology Strategic Development Plan

Since the BioMelbourne Network’s inception in 2002 it has worked closely with the State Government of Victoria in supporting the growth of the Victorian biotechnology industry.

During 2007 we have deepened the working partnership between industry and Government as we jointly developed the 2007-2010 Victorian Biotechnology Strategic Development Plan.

The Plan capitalises on Victoria’s strengths in human health and agricultural biotechnology and seeks to expand our capacity to tackle environmental and climate change issues.

Most importantly, the Plan is primarily focused on continuing to build a competitive business environment by addressing translational and commercialisation issues facing Victorian enterprises.

We are committed to a Victorian biotechnology industry which is characterised by mature, sustainable and flourishing biotechnology companies.

And our partnership with the Government, AusBiotech and the biotechnology sector will respond to immediate challenges and provides a strong base for growth over the next three years.
